Air Source Heat Pump Installation in Oxwich Bay, Gower, Swansea

This 19th Century coalhouse building at the southern end of Oxwich bay has a rich and varied history having been initially used as a storage location for coal, brought in by boat, from the turn of the century to the beginning of the 1950’s. It was requisitioned during the war and has since been a café and a water sport centre, however it has remained empty since the 1990’s and was considered a “blot” on the beautiful Gower coastline by many local residents.
This large property has been restored and renovated and is now a luxurious restaurant and bar with breath-taking views of the Gower peninsula, across Oxwich Bay and Three Cliffs Bay. These panoramic coastal views are unparralled both from within the building and on the large terraces facing the sea.

The Problem:

The Owner was keen to provide his customers with a comfortable dining experience but didn’t want to spend large amounts on an inefficient and maintenance heavy oil or LPG system.
In order to safeguard this historic asset a heating system that did not impact upon the character of the building was required.

WDS Green Energy suggested an air source heat pump coupled with an under floor heating system for the heating needs of the business. Under floor heating was the ideal solution as the building’s interior was fully redesigned to stay in keeping with both the heritage of the building and its beachfront local.

The Solution:

A Dimplex LA 16 MS air source heat pump coupled with under floor heating was installed by WDS Green Energy. The heat pump provides all the heating requirement from the property and the under floor heating system is an unobtrusive way to distribute this heat throughout the building without spoiling the aesthetics of the interior design.

The Benefits:

This highly efficient air source heat pump heating system is not only three times more energy efficient than traditional heating but will have significantly reduced running costs when compared to oil or LPG heating system. Unlike oil or LPG systems this ‘green’ technology will make this business property eligible for monies from the Government backed Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) when the scheme is extended to include air source heat pumps in the early 2014.
